The Book of Discipline

The Book of Discipline reflects United Methodists' understanding of the Church and outlines what is expected of The United Methodist Church's laity and clergy. It provides a definitive view of The United Methodist Church by detailing the laws, plans, polity, and processes by which The United Methodist Church governs itself. In addition, The Book of Discipline includes the Constitution of The United Methodist Church, its history, its doctrinal standards, and its mission to spread the word of Jesus Christ. The Constitution of The United Methodist Church, Doctrinal Standards and Our Theological Task, Social Principles, The Mission and Ministry of the Church, and the Organization and Administration of the Church are included within The Book of Discipline. Originally published in 1784, a new edition is released every four years following the meeting of the General Conference, which passes legislation that is included in the Book of Discipline.
